Shanee Roe | Offene Tür, geschlossener Raum | 17.09.2021-30.10.2021

Wannsee Contemporary is happy to announce the opening of the gallery with a solo exhibition with new paintings and drawings by artist Shanee Roe.

Offene Tür, geschlossener Raum presents recent works by Shanee Roe in which she treats canvas and paper as a ruthless site for the explosion of bare bodies; human and non-human alike. In her new paintings and drawings created in cities far away such as Tel Aviv, Leipzig, Zeitz and Užice, Serbia, Roe further explores and expressively depicts power relations ranging from intimate sexuality to intense compassion. In her creative process she captures and denotes modes of human fragility in mundane to amused scenery. The arresting outcome may be described as impulsive, grotesque and raw, while holding unknown secrets waiting to be unraveled by the viewer. Roe’s paintings and drawings are bare and hence familiar; they are oddly exposed as they are tender.

It might be the daunting nakedness of humans, animals and/in public spaces, which pointedly arouses and frustrates an inner desire for an immediate judgment. Paintings are sometimes perceived as a relic of history and anachronistic in a world dominated by technology and social media; however, Roe alludes freely to the history of last century paintings from Expressionism to The New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit). Recently, Roe has been described by Haaretz Newspaper as a “herald of the “New Israeli Expressionism”. Her candid imagery of current and everyday situations demand an endurance that is also embedded in the materiality of the medium of painting itself. In vivid and poignant colors, Roe portrays intimate encounters pouring herself into a layered surface of distressing truths.

Roe’s first museum exhibition will also open in September 2021 at Kunstmuseen Erfurt, Germany.
